چکیده

The Assumption-based Truth Maintenance System (ATMS) [de Kleer, 1986] is the most wel l known implementation of any dynamic reasoning system. Some connections have been established between the A T M S and various nonmonotonic logics (e.g. autoepistemic logic [Reinfrank et al., 1989]). We describe the relationship between the A T M S and the A G M logic of belief [Gardenfors, 1988], and show that it is possible to simulate the behaviour of the A T M S using the A G M logic by encoding the justif icational information as an epistemic entrenchment ordering. The A T M S context switching is performed by A G M expansion and contraction operations. We present an algorithm for calculating this entrenchment ordering, and prove its correctness relative to a functional specification of the A T M S . This result demonstrates that the A G M logic, which is based on the coherence theory of just i f icat ion, is able to achieve both coherence and foundational style behaviour via the choice of epistemic entrenchments.

Belief Revision: A Computational Approach

In order to reason about the real world, intelligent systems must have ways of dealing with incomplete and inconsistent information. This issue is addressed in the study of nonmonotonic reasoning, truth maintenance and database update. Belief revision is a formal approach which is central to these areas. This thesis describes a computational approach to the logic of belief revision developed by...

- 1 - Encoding The ATMS In AGM Logic ( Revised )

The two main theories of justification are the foundational theory and the coherence theory. We choose as representatives of these two theories the ATMS [de Kleer 1986] and the AGM logic [Gärdenfors 1988a], and show that it is possible to simulate the ATMS in the AGM logic by encoding the justificational information as epistemic entrenchments. The ATMS context changes are performed by AGM expan...

Contraction in Propositional Logic

The AGM model for the revision and contraction of belief sets provides rationality postulates for each of the two cases. In the context of finite propositional logic, Katsuno and Mendelzon pointed out postulates for the revision of belief bases which correspond to the AGM postulates for the revision of beliefs sets. In this paper, we present postulates for the contraction of propositional belie...

The AGM model for the revision and contraction of beliefs sets provides sets of postulates for each of the two cases. In the context of finite propositional logic, Katsuno and Mendelzon printed out some sets of postulates for the revision of belief bases which correspond to the postulates AGM revision of beliefs sets. In this paper, we present postulates for the contraction of propositional bel...

The Implementation of a First-Order Logic AGM Belief Revision System

Belief revision is increasingly being seen as central to a number of fundamental problems in Artificial Intelligence such as nonmonotonic reasoning, reasoning about action, truth maintenance and database update. This paper describes the first implementation of an AGM belief revision system. The system is based on classical firstorder logic, and for any finitely representable belief state, it ef...
